Plan Mode

Break complex tasks into structured plans with to-do items the AI can execute step by step.

What Is Plan Mode?

Plan Mode is a structured way to tackle complex, multi-step tasks. Instead of trying to do everything in a single response, the AI creates a plan with discrete to-do items, then executes each step one at a time.

When to Use Plan Mode

Plan Mode is automatically suggested when the AI detects a task that would benefit from structured execution. You can also explicitly request it:

Plan: Restructure our project database to add sprint tracking, velocity metrics, and a burndown chart.

How It Works

  1. Planning — The AI analyzes your request and creates a list of to-do items
  2. Review — You can review, edit, reorder, or remove items before execution begins
  3. Execution — The AI works through each item, checking them off as it goes
  4. Summary — When complete, you get a summary of everything that was done

The Plan Panel

When Plan Mode is active, a panel appears showing your to-do list with:

  • Checkboxes for each item
  • Status indicators (pending, in progress, complete)
  • The ability to add, edit, or remove items mid-execution
Note

You can pause execution at any time to adjust the plan or ask questions about a specific step.

Examples

Content creation:

Plan: Write a 5-page product brief for our new feature, including market analysis, user stories, competitive landscape, technical requirements, and launch timeline.

Data organization:

Plan: Clean up the customer database — remove duplicates, standardize phone number formats, fill in missing industry tags, and create a summary report.

Workspace setup:

Plan: Set up project management for Q1. Create a tasks database, a documents folder for each project, a weekly standup template, and an automation to send Monday reminders.
