Granola vs Otter: Which AI Notetaker Is Worth Paying For?

Granola and Otter both turn a meeting into notes. They do it in opposite ways, and they charge for different things. Most roundups stop at “which transcript is nicer.” The bill, the bot, and the leftover work after the call are the parts that actually decide.

The real difference

Otter joins the call. A bot (or Otter’s meeting agent) sits in Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams, records, and produces a transcript and summary. That is the product people mean by “AI notetaker.”

Granola does not send a bot. You take light notes; the model enhances them. The pitch is notes that sound like you wrote them, without a participant named Granola in the gallery.

If your culture hates meeting bots, Granola is the comparison. If you need a recording when you were not in the room, Otter is the comparison. They are not interchangeable.

Pricing at a glance

Headline figures. Otter’s site shows monthly and annual; Granola’s public page lists a per-user monthly rate.

Otter Pro’s annual rate is the one most comparison tables quote. The monthly sticker is about double. Otter Business follows the same pattern: $30 month-to-month vs $19.99 annual.

Granola Basic is a taste: AI notes, limited history, chat across meetings, shared folders. Business is unlimited notes and history, advanced models, billing, MCP, and API. Enterprise adds SSO, admin, org-wide retention, and training opt-out for the whole team.

Otter Free is metered in minutes: 300 per month, 30 minutes per conversation, and the 25 most recent conversations. Pro is 1,200 minutes and 90 minutes per meeting. Business is unlimited meetings and a 4-hour cap. If you live in back-to-back calls, Basic runs out in a few days. Ignore the starred Pro/Business discounts unless you qualify — Otter’s page marks some of those as India-issued cards or first-time offers.

A 10-person team

Assume everyone needs notes, and you pay annually where that exists.

Granola does not publish a cheaper annual SKU on the marketing page — $14 is the Business number they show. Otter’s annual Pro looks cheaper per head until you need a shared company workspace, at which point you are on Business.

Ten people on Otter Pro is not a team plan. Pro caps a workspace at five billed users, so that row is ten individual (or two tiny) subscriptions. If the job is “the transcript lives where the team can find it,” budget Otter Business or Granola Business, not the Pro line.

What breaks after month one

The bot. Some customers will not join a call with a recorder in the participant list. Legal and sales teams often already have a rule. Granola exists because of that rule. Otter exists because skipping the recorder means no transcript when you were absent.

Minutes vs history. Otter’s free and Pro limits are time. Granola’s free limit is how far back you can see. You hit a wall either way; it is a different wall.

MCP. Both now expose an MCP server. Otter lists it on Basic. Granola puts MCP and API on Business. Either way, the agent can read notes. The tasks still live in a different tool unless you put them there.

Otter’s product is the meeting agent. If you cannot have a bot in the call, you are shopping Granola (or a human notetaker), not a quieter Otter.

Does Granola record the meeting?

Granola’s pitch is notes without a bot joining. Do not treat it as a compliance archive of the audio unless their current terms say otherwise. If you need a recording of record, that is a different purchase.

Which one should a project team use?

If the pain is “we forget what we decided,” either notes tool can help. If the pain is “we know what we decided and still do not do it,” you need the follow-ups in the same place as the project, not a better summary.
