Both products now sell a “project”: a folder of chats, files, and instructions so the model does not start from zero every time. The names match. The products do not.
This is a current look at Projects in ChatGPT and Claude project sharing as of 14 August 2026. Prices and limits change. Check the vendor pages before you buy.
What a “project” actually is
A ChatGPT Project groups chats, uploaded files, custom instructions, and project memory. OpenAI’s help article calls them “smart workspaces” for long-running work. They are available on Free and paid ChatGPT plans. Sharing with teammates is available on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro as well as Business, Enterprise, and Edu.
A Claude Project is a knowledge base plus instructions that chats in that project can use. On Team and Enterprise, you can make a project public to the organization or private to invited members. Chats inside a Claude project stay private unless you share them. Group sharing is an Enterprise beta.
Neither is a team workspace in the documents-and-tasks sense. Both are a way to keep a chat product pointed at a pile of context.

Where they feel the same
You upload a brief, write instructions (“you are the launch copilot”), and start chats that stay on-topic. That is useful. It is also why people compare them: both solve “I am tired of re-pasting the same PDF.”
Both also stay inside the chat product. The source of truth is still whatever you uploaded or connected. If the real spec lives in a doc your teammate edited this morning, the project only knows if someone re-uploaded it or the connector found it.
Where they diverge
Sharing and chat visibility. Claude is stricter by default: the project can be shared, the chats are not. ChatGPT’s shared project is a live context hub — members see chats, files, and instructions. That is better for “pick up where she left off” and worse if you did not want every scratchpad visible.
Memory. ChatGPT will remember chats and files in the project. Sharing turns on project-only memory and you cannot revert it. Claude’s knowledge is the corpus; it does not advertise a ChatGPT-style memory of every prior chat in the folder.
Admin and connectors. Claude Team includes connectors and a dedicated enterprise-search project. ChatGPT Business includes Company Knowledge, Apps, Agent, and Projects in the standard seat. If the job is “search Slack and Drive from the chat,” both vendors now sell that on the team plan. If the job is “the answer becomes a task next to the doc,” neither does.
File ceilings. Five files on ChatGPT Free is a demo. Twenty-five on Plus is a working folder, not a company corpus. Forty on Business is still a curated pack, not the wiki.
What a 10-person team actually pays
You do not buy “Projects.” You buy the seat that unlocks sharing, admin, and connectors.

ChatGPT Business is $20 per user per month billed annually, or $25 monthly, with a two-seat minimum — OpenAI’s business pricing. Claude Team is the same headline: $20 annually or $25 monthly, two-member minimum, up to 150 seats — Anthropic’s Team plan article. Both also sell Premium seats at $100 / month billed annually or $125 monthly.
Ten people comparing “which project feature is nicer” are often already looking at a $2,400 / year chat bill before anyone has a durable place for the work.
Frequently asked questions
Can I share a ChatGPT Project on Plus?
Yes. OpenAI updated project sharing in October 2025 so Free, Plus, Pro, and Go can share. Collaborator and file caps still follow the owner’s plan. Company-wide groups, SCIM, and workspace admin controls are a Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspace.
Are Claude chats in a shared project visible to the team?
No. Anthropic’s sharing article is explicit: even on a public Team project, chats stay private unless you share them. Members get the knowledge and instructions, not your thread.
Is a Project a knowledge base?
It is a bounded one. Useful for a launch pack or a client folder. Weak as the system of record for briefs, decisions, and tasks that keep changing.
Do I need to pick one?
Many teams already pay for both. The comparison is which chat folder to use for a given effort — not which product replaces the workspace.
If you wanted the work, not another folder
ChatGPT Projects and Claude Projects are good at keeping a model on-topic. They are still chat products with an upload ceiling. The leftover job is the same one teams hit with meeting notes and wikis: the answer is in the thread, the task is somewhere else, and the source of truth was never the chat.
